Karate comes from a long line of Martial Arts stretching back into history, yet its training methods and philosophy are of immense relevance to modern western society. Karate-Do is a martial way – the Way of the Empty Hand.

This symbolises its non-violent nature and also the ideal of confronting one’s own real self.  All martial arts have these principles at their heart to a greater or lesser extent.

It is these ideals that are stressed by the Reiwaryu Ryushinkan School of Karate-Do. The same hard training methods which were needed to condition the mind and body of warriors to meet life or death situations are now used in a different ways. Training methods have now been adapted to suit modern times and are there to help build confidence and develop respect. This encourages and cultivates a positive outlook for all within the school.

Diddy Deshi is a fantastic way to introduce Children under 8 years to Karate-Do.

Traditionally, young children were not taught Karate-Do because of the extreme physical demands and high levels of concentration involved in the training. However, we have now amended our teaching programme to cater for this age group. We believe that with appropriate guidance from well-qualified teachers, excellent benefits are to be gained.

Children attending our classes enter a safe and friendly environment where teachers are not only sensitive, qualified and vetted (with DBS Certification – Police Checked). The aim of our Diddy Deshi classes is to provide a smooth, confident transition for children wishing to join our junior level sessions.

Diddy Deshi start at 5 years – 7 years (children aged 4 years can be accepted at the teacher’s discretion).

Junior Sessions 8 years + train with respect, confidence and self discipline.

We believe once children reach the age of 8 years old they are ready to integrate into a formal Karate-Do class. Whilst incorporating self respect and confidence, we aim to allow children to develop not only physically but with a sense of awareness, co-ordination and concentration.

We ensure the children learn traditional Karate-Do techniques in a serious environment, always adding that little bit of fun to keep them motivated.  Staying safe inside and outside the dojo is our key goal, with each child developing at their own pace.

Adults of any age and fitness are welcome.

Be it health, fitness or the need to learn some self defence skills, many people start for all sorts of reasons. Our philosophy of SELF development which runs through the heart of our school, means you can start Karate-Do at any age or fitness.

A gradual development of repetitive training which dates back to the early 1900’s means you can slowly gain the benefits karate-Do can have on you physically and mentally.

The classes include fitness and strength training as well as stretching techniques that prepare you for the basics drills of Kihon (basic techniques). Once you advance your development will include traditional Kata (techniques performed in a pre-arranged sequence), pre-arranged pair work and Kumite (free sparring) amongst many other traditional Karate-Do training practices.

Dan Grade (Black Belt) training – developing a higher perspective of Karate-Do.

There is no fast track route to Dan grade in our school. Shodan (1st Dan) normally takes between 5-10 years and is only awarded to 15 years + students. With this grade comes responsibility in all aspects of your life; honour, respect and self discipline to name a few principles we consider very important in all our Dan grade practitioners.

All students aiming for this level are helped and guided carefully to achieve their goal. The school is a non profit organisation, which means all instructors can focus on the development of students and not be distracted by the need to financially benefit from the classes.

Achieving Dan grade is a very demanding and rewarding experience, that will become one of the most memorable moments of your life. To be promoted to this level means demonstrating not only a proficient ability of traditional Karate-Do techniques but also to show an understanding of the essence of Karate-Do practice. Once a student has progressed to this stage they get the chance to develop Kobudo (weapons) skills. Weapons include; Bo, Tonfa, Nunchuku, Jo and Sai. The opportunity to train and compete in Japan at the school’s head quarters is also open to students of this grade.
